Sjon de Groot principally works in oils for his landscapes, but also experiments in ethereal masks, clay and watercolours. The work is bold and multi-dimensional, an expression in colour of an African coming to terms with the landscapes of his adopted land. Originally trained by Geoffrey & Michael Armstrong at the JHB School of Art in South Africa, Sjon de Groot completed many commissions for businesses and private collectors there, including collaborating with architects and engineers on a public stained glass installation at Standard Bank, Cape Town. He immigrated to Canada in 1997 and now teaches art at various locations.
