Sue Riley

I am a self-taught Mosaic Artist, living in Port Credit.

I have always been in love with colour and pattern and have done everything from stained glass, textiles (embroidery, traditional rug hooking) to ceramics, for more than 40 years.  When I discovered mosaics, it was a natural fit.  I have been working in this medium for 23 years, now.

Mosaics opened up the door to teaching workshops (Living Art Centre, “A Stained Glass Store”) and the co-founding of two local shows (Artisan Studio Tour, Arts on the Credit).  Over the years, I have also been a part of various shows (Branksome Hall, Port Credit Outdoor Art Show, Distillery District Christmas Show, Appleby College, Fair December) and my own shows, hosting other artists and artisans.

My work has been sold in shops around Ontario and I have done commissioned work, ranging from picture frames to garden sculpture.  Many of my pieces have also found homes in Dubai, England, Hong Kong, Australia and the U.S.

My one-of-a-kind work is quite colourful and quirky/whimsical.  I like to use antique china, figurines, glass beads, natural objects (seashells, stones, etc.) and found objects (buttons, jewellery, etc.) in my work.  I apply them to clay pots, concrete sculpture, walls – whatever I come across.

I have a lot of fun working in mosaics and get tremendous pleasure if something I have made evokes a memory in the person who sees my work and they share their stories with me.
