Sandamali Angunawela

I am a self-taught Canadian artist, originally from Sri Lanka. My primary mediums include acrylic paint and pencil drawings in graphite, coloured pencil and charcoal.

In 2020 when COVID-19 hit, I was laid off from work and had to spend a lot of time at home with nothing much to do. That’s when I first started to draw and paint. I am fascinated and inspired by the human struggle in developing countries and their incredible resilience in the face of so much hardship. It is something very close to my heart as I, myself, was born and raised in a third-world country. I find myself constantly counting my blessings, which helps to keep me humble and grounded.

Having started my artistic practice in the last five years, developing skills and techniques, while also featuring in a variety of fairs, festivals, and exhibitions across the GTA and Quebec. In that time, I have been the recipient of several art awards, including the Emerging Artist by Emerging Curator award from Toronto Outdoor Art Fair (TOAF) in 2022.
