Charles Wakefield was born and raised in Montreal. Though drawn to art from an early age, he delayed formal training until completing both a B.A. (Economics) and a B.Sc. (Geophysics) and working for a few years in Gold and Base Metals Exploration. After living under canvas in Canada’s northern forests and venturing out into the tundra, he moved to Toronto to attend the then Ontario College of Art. He attended OCA for almost 10 years on a part-time basis, four nights and Saturdays. He studied painting, drawing, anatomy, sculpture – but was graduated far too soon. There is so much more to learn.
After completing a Masters in Environmental Applied Science and Management in 2004, he focused on Plein Air landscape painting, which he continues today. Charles Wakefield is also interested in Street ART and has completed several murals over the years.
His work is about light and form. His favourite subjects include the human figure, water bodies and our aging cities, buildings and infrastructure. Wakefield’s preferred medium is oil on wood panel, but also works in acrylic, water colour on occasion.
